New Recreational Marine Fishing License

The new Recreational Marine Fishing License is available for purchase on the Internet or from NYS hunting and fishing license vendors. As of October 1, 2009, all anglers who wish to fish in the marine and coastal district or to fish in other state waters for "migratory fish from the sea" (such as striped bass, American shad, hickory shad, blueback herring, alewife) must have a recreational marine fishing license.

Party and charter vessel owners or operators must also possess a recreational marine fishing license, which will cover all passengers aboard their vessels.

More information about this new license is available at the Marine Recreational Fishing FAQs.

Sea Bass Emergency Closure Effective Oct 5th

This morning a final rule filed in the federal register, which will implement an Emergency Closure of the recreational fishery for black sea bass in federal waters, effective Monday, October 5, 2009. The closure
applies to all federal waters north of Cape Hatteras, N.C., for 180 days
in response to recent landing data that showed recreational fishermen may catch more than double their annual quota by the end of the year.
Landings data and scientific analyses show recreational fishermen have reached their quota and could exceed their 1.14 million pound harvest
limit by as much as 84 to 225 percent, if the fishery is not closed.
